Overview:
In the first week of August, General Walker and the Eight Army General Staff studied proposals for a counterattack out of Masan and, in a conference on the subject, decided the Army could not support a general offensive and that there would be insufficient troops to carry it out. The Conference, however, approved a proposal for a counterattack by Eighth Army reserve towards Chinju, which might relieve enemy pressure against the perimeter in the Taegu area by forcing the diversion of some North Korean units southwards. Led by Major General William B. Kean, the Task Force was composed of units from the 25th Infantry Division, 5th Regimental Combat Team, and the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade. Intending to beat the Army's 5th RCT to Sachon, the Marines of the 1st Battalion set out on an aggressive recon by fire into the Chongshan valley.Attacker: American (USMC) (1/5 Marines "Geronimo", 1st Marine Division)
