Overview:

One of the first objectives of Operation Overlord was the seizure of the bridges over the Orne River and Canal de Caen just west of Ranville. The bridges were vital links to the British 6th Airborne’s bridgehead over the Orne on the Allied left flank. Major John Howard’s reinforced D Company was given the task of seizing the bridges in a glider-borne Coup de Main attack. D Company would land almost simultaneously with pathfinders for the main parachute force of the 6th Airborne. As the men of D Company boarded gliders at 2230 hours on 5 June, they shook hands and passed along the greetings “Ham” and “Jam”. Those words were the codes to alert the paratroopers that the canal and river bridges had been captured intact.
Attacker: British (Companies B and D, 2nd Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry)

2025-02-04(D) John Garlic vs Maurizio Grassi German winBritish glider landing went well and quickly overwhelmed German defenders around the PB. British crossed bridge and when they tried to clear bridge, German HIP opened up and took out clearing stack (bad MC rolls). This allowed Germans to hold out.
2024-07-25(D) Bob McKenna vs Stephen V Morello German winBrtish crash all.3 gliders one group 2 groups elimnatwd. Remaining force gets to bridge. Many killed in melee on.bridge. British unable to clwar bridge despite push. Turned catastrophe into something. Germans win.
2024-03-02(D) Dan Best vs Kermit Mullins British win
2024-03-02(A) Kermit Mullins vs Dan Best British winBritish landing went nice and smooth. Germans broke both LMG's and the 50L. The British then eliminated the Germans in CC and on Turn 4 cleared he bridge for the win. Lot of bad luck for the Germans in this one.

2022-12-28(D) Camille Garek vs Florian Yvis German winVery good night introductory scenario.
2022-11-24(A) M T vs T.L. German winOur second take on the scenario started with another aggressive landing by the Brits. This time, two Gliders were damaged. Casualties were also heavy from the start, with Major Howard himself being killed due to a stroke of bad luck (two IFT snake eyes in a row by the German player!). The Fortifications were significantly more troublesome this time around.

My Brits did manage to gather themselves from the shock and make a real fight of it, however. The defending AT Gun and Pillbox were neutralized, the bridge cleared of explosives and the German garrison commander taken out in Melee with his Kübelwagen driving entourage. In the end the game was only decided in the Rally Phase of Turn 6, when it became clear I had no chance to take the western side of the bridge anymore. The defenders had only a single GO 436 left.

Ham & Bloody Jam is not my favorite scenario from a game mechanics point of view. It is very dicey, with the Glider landing rolls, the required Clearance DR and the small number of troops involved. But on the plus side, it does create a very atmospheric and memorable battle and plays fast.
2022-11-06(A) M T vs T.L. British winThe British landed with perfect rolls and attacked the bridge aggressively. They were greatly aided by a fortunate German Starshell scatter roll, which blinded the defenders and allowed the Ox and Bucks to quickly cover the remaining ground. The elite Brits advance along the bridge into good firing positions. After Turn 2 the German garrison was broken almost to a man and the defenders threw in the towel.

Midway through the game the German player realized that he had understood the Glider setup conditions wrong and that his Fortifications were therefore badly misplaced. The game was already well underway, so we decided to see how it would turn out and then setup for a new take, this time with properly based defensive works.

The scenario is action packed, fun and tells a story. Nice touch with the German officer arriving on the scene in his Kübelwagen. After the game I realized the experience reminds me of old British Commando comics more than a bit.

2019-07-20(D) Simon Staniforth vs British win
2019-06-05(A) Raoul Duke vs MB British winThis is a scenario that appeals to me for a number of reasons. Probably better than any other scenario I've played, it takes a very specific, memorable, and important action and commits it to cardboard form. It requires audacity on the part of the attacker and careful planning by the defense.

Is it dicey? Yes. The glider landings and the need to clear the bridge see to that.

Is it a good way to learn night and glider rules? Yes.

Does it capture the drama of the first minutes of D-Day? Yes.

Is it fun? Absolutely.

Would I play it again? In a heartbeat.
2018-04-15(D) Ricardo Garcia vs Pablo Garcia British winA good game to prepare for the Pegasus Bridge CG.
2018-02-01(A) Øyvind Jacobsen Bjørkås vs Nils German win
2015-09-10(A) Neil Andrews vs Cameron Blackwood German winPlaying the lead in scenarios of Pegasus Bridge so we'd prep for the CG to follow

My paras landed pretty well and managed to secure one side of the bridge and onto the cafe.
But I could not break the defenders no matter how I tried and the Ox and Bucks would crumble at the smell of a bullet
(They would come back again quick enough, but not enough
2015-03-06(D) Russell Dewhurst vs Gordon British winCame down to the last CC!
2015-02-23(A) Bill Brodie vs Steven Bond German winWe started with a house rule; if the British lost more than one glider in the landing we would start again. First time, first two gliders destroyed. Second start, first and third gliders were destroyed, third start, first glider destroyed, but next two got down, we have a game!
To begin with the Brits walked into a wall of fire, but it didn't take long for the German conscripts to melt away. Got a squad onto the bridge and started to try and clear the explosives, three attempts and no luck, so despite every German unit being broken, still no win for the Brits!
2011-11-04(A) Pieter Van Innis vs Geert Van Loo German win
2010-05-31(D) Edward Fritz vs Jon Davis German winMy opponent and I were trying to pick a scenario and he said "something that uses a lot of Chapter E" - so we played a nighttime glider landing. It was my opponent's first time with gliders and I would like to think that he enjoyed the ability to land in a hex and advance out of it during APh (unlike paratroopers). Because this scenario is not under the restrictions of the Pegasus Bridge CG, I was able to fire a starshell early in the game and release all Germans from their "No Move" status. This allowed a fierce group of conscripts to setup fire lanes down the length of the bridge. The rule of thumb for this game was, "If it is Elite, it will break." British glider troops and especially leaders fell to pieces under the mildest fire. A German sniper found Mr. 9-2 and knocked him off (and he was popular with the men). The British assault fell to pieces quickly and the British player realized he should have been more aggressive. A great "dry run" for the CG if we get around to it.
