Overview:
The 50th Indian Parachute Brigade retreated from Sangshak and was now defending the area of Nunshigum Hill, overlooking the Iril River valley. Despite being pushed off the hills two weeks earlier by Lee tanks of the 3rd Carabiniers, the Japanese 15th Infantry Division was re-establishing observation posts on the high ground, threatening to interfere with operations on the Imphal airfield.
