Overview:
The Soviet invasion of Finland was grinding to a halt. Poor planning and the sheer tenacity of the Finnish defense had produced staggering losses on the Russian side and minimal gains strategically. In December, Mannerheim, the Finnish commander organized a series of savage counterattacks all along the front. The Russians, overwhelmed, strained to escape isolated pockets rapidly encircled by Finnish advances.
