Overview:

After the surrender of Britain in August 1940, Hitler consolidated his gains to ready for the assault on Russia, commandering armaments output and raising volunteer British units. Sweeping the Red Army before them, German troops took Moscow before the early winter of 1941, then dug in against winter counter attacks. As spring arrived, the assault was renewed, driving east towards Ivanono and the Urals. Desperately, the Russians gathered troops and launched a mass counterattack against the southern flank. Near Perepechino, this crashed into the British 69th SS Panzer Division “Heart of Oak”. This battle hardened unit, veterans of the Moscow defense, was guarding a crucial supply base and bridges over the Livod River. Hearing news of the advance, RSM Garnett reminded the men of the regimental motto – “We always are ready, steady, boys, steady”.
