Overview:

The tide of the Axis advance had reached the highest peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. After heavy fighting to break out of the Terek bend, German armored forces were again concentrated for another stab at the Caspian Sea. However, the first step would be to straighten out the lines, and take the capital of the Soviet Republics of the Karbardin and Balkars, Nalchik. Advancing on Nalchik was the Romanian 2nd Mountain Division. With two German panzer divisions slicing behind Nalchik, the Romanians kicked off their attack on the 25th. Despite having to make two river crossings, the 2nd Mountain Division reached the outskirts of Nalchik the next day. Meanwhile, the Panzer divisions had cut off Nalchik, and began to bog down in the heavy house-to-house fighting. However, the Soviets were cut off, and when German tanks from the 13th Panzer Division began to probe Nalchik from the south, the Soviets collapsed. Several thousand Soviet troops were trapped and destroyed between the German anvil and the Romanian hammer.

2020-11-18(A) wayne baumber vs Graham Smith Russian winGood game, the Axis started well but the Russian HMG directed by the 9-2 went on a killing spree mid game and KIA'd 3 squads and a leader. Even with that disaster the end game was closer than I expected.
2017-03-27(D) Dave Mareske vs Mark Fischer Russian winEarly kill shots on moving Romanians left them unable to take the village even though the StuGs still did plenty of damage.
2016-11-03(A) X von Marwitz vs Philippe Briaux Russian winPlayed the attacking Romanians/Germans and could not really get a hold in the village. At the same time, I think it was not easy to set up as the Russian. Possibly in the "not grokked" category.
2015-11-08(A) Michael Rodgers vs George Kelln Russian winGeorge Kelln of Victoria BC bid Romanian and I bid Russian. I knew the T-26 tanks were vulnerable, but I felt I needed their firepower to hold back the Romanians. I tried to limit their exposure by putting them in the right side woods. My 9-2 with MMG was in the center stone building. One LMG was on each side. The ATR was in the rear awaiting the German Stug reinforcements. The plan was for a steady retreat into the stone buildings in the rear of the central hill. I lost one tank to a MTR on the first turn. The second went down to a point blank LMG shot as it tried to move away. George attacked well, with lots of HS leading the way and trying to get behind the hill. He was successful on the Russian right, but not on the left. The Commisar helped more than he hurt, and the 9-2 performed well in fire and rally duties. I caught a break with the Stugs. One had only one smoke round. The other took a few shots, then broke its MA. During the last Romanian Prep fire, they still had a chance with good results, but they did not get them, so George conceded.
