Overview:
Sashegy Hill dominated the southern part of Buda, which if lost, would have spelled disaster for the defenders. Its capture would give the Russians a vantage point over the whole of the city. The Germans and Hungarians, therefore, developed its defense in depth. One group assigned to this defense was the Vannay Battalion, a group of young fascists formed as a commando unit under Laszlo Vannay. The Vannay Battalion set out to relieve a German unit on Sashegy Hill. A strong Russian attack soon isolated the battalion on the hill. The battalion fought around the hill for days, often fighting hand-to-hand to hold individual buildings.Attacker: Russian (Elements of the 86th Guards Rifle Division)
