Overview:

Italian XVI Corps commander Rossi sent a mobile regiment from Niscemi to attack Gela from Piano Lupo. Half way there they encountered 100 US paratroopers who had just eliminated an Italian strong point and set up a blocking position. Two Italian infantry companies set out in extended formation but were pinned down by withering American fire. Realizing the Americans lacked heavy weapons, the Italians moved an artillery gun up onto a nearby hill. Once their artillery piece made it to the heights, the Italian assault began. Waves of soldiers descended on the Americans position and deadly accurate ordnance fire began to take its toll. Realizing they were out gunned, the paratroopers intended to fall back to Piano Lupo. Just as the order to pull out was received, naval artillery shells began coming down, hitting friend and foe alike, making movement hazardous at best.
Attacker: Italian (General Rossi’s “Mobile Group E” Regiment, XVI Corps)
Defender: American (Scattered Elements of 3rd Battalion, 504 Parachute Inf. Reg., 82nd Airborne Division)

2021-06-28(D) David Ramsey vs Martin Barker Italian winThe Americans were doing ok, despite very little intervention from the Naval artillery but with such few strongpoints the Gun was able to destroy two squads (and almost the buildings they were in) worth of defence and then a few bad breaks at the end of the game turned the game to the Italians.

Interesting premise with the sniper style OBA - probably dicey though.

2021-06-27(D) Andy Bagley vs Mick Allen Italian winBit of an odd one this. Huge number of Italian troops, including elites/fanatics, plus a 9-2 leader and a hero, and supported by a leader-directed 150mm Art gun that can fire at will almost anywhere down into the village. American paratroops are strong but there are few of them and their setup is restricted, so I found it hard to put together a coherent defence. It seems to me that the Americans need some kind of a break, perhaps through a lucky shot with the random Naval Artillery. Luck wasn't with me here however; despite taking some early losses the Italians swarmed into the village and were able to exit sufficient EVPs with a turn to spare.
