Overview:

Moulmein – the third largest city in Burma with nearly 100,000 residents and long loyal to the Crown – clings to the eastern bank of the mouth of the Salween River. Its all-weather airfield, and position astride an important transportation route as well as being the guardian of the eastern approaches to the Sittang Bridge, made it an imperative objective for any would-be invader. Japanese Army planners knew this and made Moulmein’s capture the primary objective before striking for the Sittang Bridge and on to Rangoon. British planners were hampered by its nearly indefensible position. With little to no river gunboat presence, and no reliable river transportation available, holding the eastern bank would be very costly. The decision was made to hold Moulmein with colonial troops and provincial police forces in order to slow down the invader – hopefully long enough for the defenses around Sittang Bridge to gel.

2019-09-12(D) Jeff B vs Steve Etzelmueller British winIf you can ignore the goofy SSRs about the sappers and river this one plays quite fun, despite turning into those most boring of scenarios - the PTO blockade. This is most likely due to the fact that the defense is constantly adjusting to meet the Japanese attack. I was very worried going into this about the brittleness of my troops versus the large potential area of Japanese approach, but if you just focus on fortifying the obvious north approach and worry about the rest later you should be fine. The Japanese used their OBA for smoke, which I think was a mistake, though I tried to maintain as much concealment as possible to make placement difficult for them. Despite being wounded by a sniper, my radioman came through just in time when the shit all hit the fan in Turn 4. There were obviously many banzais in this game, but Turn 4 saw the Japanese crossing the crest of the temple hill and getting mowed down nicely. Then the next half turn my OBA dropped the boom on them (as well as on a few of my own troops). The Japanese ended up losing 9 squads and 3 leaders - just that turn! Their force had been so weakened at that point that they conceded.
