Overview:
To delay the Soviet onslaught from reaching the main Finnish defense line, the finns engaged in a series of fighting withdrawals. Orders for one such delaying action was directed to 1st Company, Hämmen ratsurykmeniti (Häme cavalry regiment) at the small village of Perkjärvi, with support from the only combat-worthy AFV in the entire Finnish army at the time, a Landsverk 182 armored car commanded by Vilho Savikurki. After a suitbale delay, the Finns began to pull out when Savikurki realized a Soviet force had cut off the cavalry's rearguard platoon from the rest of the force. As Soviet fire poured in from all directions, Savikurki's armored car was able to escort the cavalrymen to safety, sheltering four wounded men inside the cramped quarters of the AFV.Attacker: Finnish (1st Company, Häme Cavalry Regiment)

2023-11-22 | (D) O Ramaille | vs | Eric Partizan Eric | Finnish win | My mostly inexperimented Russians tried to stop the escape of a group of Finns supported by a Swedish-made armored car. My initial plan to slow down the Finns in the woods worked quite well. My Russians resisted one or even two rounds of close combat, eroding the enemy forces a bit. My HMG pierced the enemy AFV with the first shot. And my forces managed to channel the enemy and close the accesses. However, the Finns found a way around with just enough VP, under a few inconsequential shots. The Russians repositionned themselves and my HMG guarded the exit. The brave Finns ran through the snow under enemy fire (4FP at -2), passed their 2MC. The HMG fired... and jammed! The last sporadic shots were unsufficient to stop the Finns, who escaped. A victory for the Finns in a suspenseful scenario, with the Russians unexpectedly close to victory. A very dicey and quick scenario, but also fun to play.
2023-08-06 | (A) Douglas Leslie | vs | Jeff Howell | Finnish win (VASL Log) | For the re-match against Jeff. I took the Finns. Jeff set up the MMG with his Commissar beside the woods road in W9. The Finnish sniper got hot and took out the Commissar before breaking an conscript squad.. The armoured car broke its MA but used its remaining MGs to interdict Russians trying to cross the road to reinforce the northern half of the board. This is a problem for the Russians in this scenario. They have to defend the area to the south of the road but can have problems getting across the road if the Russians attack to the north. The Finns' morale held firm as they approached the HMG position form different directions and Jeff conceded on turn 4 with only one conscript squad left from his starting OB. I think that the Russians probably need the balance for this one.
2023-07-30 | (D) Douglas Leslie | vs | Jeff Howell | Finnish win | Fun scenario that can easily be played in an evening. Jeff and I agreed to run it twice and switch sides for the second game. He took the Finns for the first playing. The Russians had the strange experience of only suffering one broken squad all game (in the first turn) which might sound like a good thing considering that over half of their force comprised conscripts. Unfortunately, they also suffered three outright KIAs when sitting still in woods locations and that kind of lowered the value of the Commissar. On the plus side, the AC broke its BMG and MA in consecutive turns which had a similar effect on its value. The Russians clung on and I smugly thought that I had done enough to win when they strung two SMCs and a conscript squad along the Finnish escape route. Jeff found an ingenious way round this by self deploying a Finnish squad and clearing a 7-0 out of the way with the help of an infantry OVR. One HS survived the fire of the 426 in the recently vacated hex and that proved to be the margin of victory when a 6+3 shot at the end was not enough to break it. Re-match next week to see if the Russians can get onto the scoreboard.
2023-04-08 | (A) Shane Pask | vs | Finnish win | I had little difficulty achieving a win on turn 6 with 9 exit VP. The commissar holed up in V2 gave me some trouble but in the end I went around as there was no one else left. |
