Overview:
The second battle for San Savino took place on 12 September. This time around the Sherwood Foresters did not advance too blindly. The attack was proceeded by reconnaissance elements, moving forward among the vineyards, searching out minefields, and drawing enemy machine-gun fire. After a bitter fight, San Savino was captured. The battle is remembered by locals as one of the worst to take place in San Marino. Streets and lanes in San Savino were said to be, ‘filled with the dead, the walls smeared by blood, both English and German’.Attacker: British (Elements of Company C, 14th Sherwood Foresters Battalion, 1st Armoured Division + Reinforcing elements of the 9th Lancers)
