Overview:

The British attempted to reach Foul Point, from where they would have been able to dominate the northern part of Akyab Island with their artillery but the Japanese had heavily reinforced the south of the peninsula, near the village of Donbaik. The Forward Defense Location (FDL) Chaung – a large river bed – stood in the way of the British advance: bunkers, trenches and artillery placed on neighboring hills made the chaung a daunting defensive position. On the morning of the 18th March, the 1st Battalion of Royal Welsh Fusiliers, among other units, had the difficult task to conquer the eastern part of the chaung, up to a strongpoint code-named M16, following a heavy bombardment.
