Overview:

The twin islands of Roi-Namur were the first major islands invaded in the Kwajalein atoll. These islands were assigned to the 4th Marine Division, a unit fresh from the States and had never seen action. While Roi fell quickly, the defenders of Namur fought tenaciously for every yard of sand. On the second day of the invasion, the 24th Marines were mopping up the last of the Japanese fortifications. Lt. Col. Dyess would go on to win a posthumous Medal of Honor for his part in the battle.
