Overview:
Following the disastrous loss of Stalingrad, German High Command faced another threat in northern Russia. After Russian breakthroughs at several points on the Don River, the Germans were in danger of losing three Heeresgruppes – in total, more men then they had lost at Stalingrad. In response, on March 6, Manstein’s Panzer Armee 4, including crack formations such as SS-Panzerkorps 3 and Infanterie-Division “Großdeutschland” launched a counteroffensive, which would later be known as the Third Battle for Kharkov.Attacker: German (Panzer-Regiment / Tiger-Kompanie / Aufklärungs-Abteilung "Großdeutschland")

The defence got off to a great start when the German Tiger stopped in a location that had been bore sighted by a T-34. It is one of the obscure parts of the rules that a DI shot can use bore sighting even though it can't use acquisition. The T-34 duly got the hull hit that it needed for the immobilization and, even though it was destroyed then the Tiger returned fire, it was a worthwhile exchange. A second panzer was taken out by a rear ATR shot By turn three, the Russian defences were still largely intact and Chip decided that it would be impossible to clear all the victory buildings and conceded. | ||

The Ht-borne infantry followed suit on Turn 2 after the German tanks VBM'd the Russians main positions (including the stumbled-upon Gun in 70L6 which improbably missed a same hex shot) and things unraveled very quickly for the Russians thereafter, who conceded in Turn 3. Everything went right for the Germans, and the Russians - who had a good set-up - were dogged by poor DRs (including failed PAATCs), but this one seems hard on the Russians absent a strong intervention of fate. The Russian 76Ls are not a very compelling weapon against the German tank force without more side-shot opportunities. Allowing some Russian set-up on Board 69 and/or adding the T-34 as HIP might make this more interesting. |
