Overview:

As the Japanese continued to push the Allied forces north, Dr. Gordon Seagrave, the "Burma Surgeon", was assigned to the defending Chinese Sixth Army operating in eastern Burma. On April 2nd, 192 he had moved his mobile surgical hospital into an old agricultural station just behind the front lines at Poyinmama. On April 4th, as truckloads of wounded Chinese poured in, news came that the Chinese were retreating to a position behind the mobile field hospital. The surgeons worked furiously to tend to the wounded and mobilize the hospital. As the hospital staff were preparing to retreat, truckloads of Chinese were arriving to reinforce the front. Japanese Bombers passed down the valley strafing the road and the reinforcing Chinese units.
