Overview:
One of the first day objectives of Operation Mars for the Russian 39th Army was the seizure of Urdom. However Urdom's immediate capture was thwarted by the German 206th Infantry Division. A reserve kampfgruppe was quickly dispatched to bolster the defenses. This kampfgruppe consisted of armor, engineers, panzer grenadiers and ski troops from the Grossdeutschland Division. Five days later, Urdom has still not fallen. In spite of suffering over 50% casualties, Zhukov demanded the town be taken at all costs. The 39th Army commander decided the best tactic was a head on assault of Urdom's bunkers and fortifications, lead by his heavy KV tanks accompanied by infantry.Attacker: Russian (373rd, 348th and 135th Rifle Divisions, and 28th and 81st Tank Brigades)
