After the declaration of war, the Kenyan-Ethiopian border remained quiet. England's toehold on the southern Ethiopian highlands rested at the mud-walled fort surrounded by barbed wire, situated opposite the Italian fort at Moyale by about half a mile. For the Italians, the British Moyale garrison represented a trivial roadblock to the invasion of Kenya.
