Overview:

On 24 October, Panzer Division 14 reached its objective of “Bread Factory #2” just south of the Barrikady. The next day the German assaults against the buildings continued but were soon checked by fierce defensive fire of the Soviet 138th Rifle Division. Sgt. Esser, leading remnants of Motorcycle Battalion 64, crouched in the ruins opposite the squat buildings of the Bread Factory. Across the street lay his company commander -- dead. Behind him sprawled the motionless body of the platoon commander -- also dead. By his side a section leader groaned deliriously, a bullet through his head. Suddenly, Esser went berserk. Leaping to his feet, he screamed "Forward!" and charged across the deadly street, his twelve remaining men close at his heels.

2023-05-26(D) Pascal Boileau vs Serge Doba Russian winThe Russians held the factory despite some losses. The German troops tried to attack from the North but their progression was too slow. The 9-1 turned berserk with 1 MMC on turn 3 and both finally died in CC. With no GO German units left in the South keeping at bay the Russian reinforcements, the game ended at turn 5.

(VASL Log)
At the start of turn 2 the Germans seemed further away from the victory buildings than at the start. However by the end of Turn 4 both victory buildings were under German control and the Russians were unable to take them back. The "crazy" 9-1 leader went berserk on Turn 3 and took two squads with him. Fortunately Paul read the scenario special rules (SSR) carefully as I had initially thought that they would all Battle Harden as there were no known enemy units in their LOS - the SSR make it clear that if there are no known enemy units in LOS then they should instead charge for the nearest Russian occupied location that is not in LOS. The berserk stack suffered a 2KIA result (which killed the leader and one squad, and "half squadded" the second), however the surviving berserk half squad went on an impressive rampage killing 2 squads and a 9-1 leader (through failure to rout) before succumbing. Note also that the railroads are embanked (see O2.1) I had initially thought they were ground level.
However the logfile (attached) revealed the secret to German success ... from turn 3 onwards the rolling average IFT DR for the Russians was just over 8 and for the Germans it was just under 7. So to win just make sure you roll low
2021-09-25(D) Paul Legg vs Peter Catchpole German winA fun little scenario. My russians held well for two turns but on turn three my sniper dried up mainly because Peter stopped rolling 5s and started rolling 4s, the German 9-1 went berserk, by SSR, taking a squad and halfsquad with him, all had been broken at the time. In the charge a halfsquad made it into G43 causing the defending squad to break, encirling the squad w mmg and 9-1 leader above to be encircled they subsequently broke and died for FTR, meanwhile the Germans successfully assaulted and captured F42 after a couple of rounds of cc. My remaining forces were unable to get back into to the G43 building and we called it in the German turn 6 PFPh.
2021-01-22(D) Kevin Sanders vs Jason Littleton Russian winGermans did a gamble and sent a few squads up the culverts. Hard stop on them. The 9-1 went berserk with 2 squads on T4 and did not make it to the VP buildings. Small German stack caught rushing the W most VP build by HMG and squad. Germans conceded. Weather played a factor as well as we ended up having high wind (hence no German Smoke)
2020-11-14(D) Vilis Pavulans vs Matias Dahlbäck German winVery well performed assault by the germans. Gun failed to do any good. HMG did a good job in the beginning but that wasn´t enough t stop the nazi horde. The germans managed to secure the VLs before the russian reinforcements came and with the good leadership, plethora of MGs the russians failed to get a HW going by missing out on one squad which took the force out of the final assault. Only one conscript squad managed to get close enough to enter into CC and victory was lost anyway since the sneaky germans also had stuffed a squad in the cellar.
2020-11-13(D) Stephen Solomon vs Chris Graff Russian winChalk this win up to the vagaries of ASL. A placed DC explodes with no n/e. Russian defenders in both OBJ hexes go down quickly due to seriously low DR. Sgt. Esser zerks in Turn 2 and eliminates my Russian 9-1 w/ 458/HMG. Game looks like an easy German win by Turn 2. With no other option, Russian reinforcements join up with the two remaining good order units in a HW, survive withering fire in OG, and take back the eastern bldg. They hold on for the win.
2020-06-12(A) Ken Rutkowski vs Bill T Russian win
2019-08-02(A) Jeff B vs John Malaska German win5.5 hrsThe 9-1 rolled a "1" at game start but no Russian was in LOS. He ended up succumbing to the sniper on Turn 2 anyway. Germans setup a kill stack who's job was to pound three hexes into submission. They eliminated a squad and MMG on Turn 1, while another squad went down via CC. Two more Russian squads were dealt with on Turn 2 as the Germans made it into both VC hexes. Losses were fairly even from there on out. The commissar, gun, and HMG were tough to deal with across the way, but eventually they were rounded up and things were well in hand. The Russian mad dash at game end saw a CX commissar and crew make it to one of the VC buildings, but the guarding German squad simply broke and routed upstairs preserving the victory.
