Overview:

The first phase of the battle for France had ended with the withdrawal of the British at Dunkirk. The German army now turned south to finish the French resistance. First it was necessary to cross the natural barrier of the Seine. At the village of Romilly, the pioneers of the 93rd Infantry Regiment were given the task of seizing the bridge before the French could blow it up. The plan was bold but simple: the men would drive in on their trucks, skirt the defenses in the village, and seize the bridge until they were relieved. The first part went smoothly,as the four trucks sped through a hail of fire with only one casualty and unloaded in a small woo near the bridge. While some of the Germans assaulted the village, the others moved through the trees and scrub towards the span.
