Overview:
On 10 July, around noon, with Gela firmly in American hands, 1st Division infantry began cautiously to move towards the hinterland since they already hadn't adequate field artillery and armor support. At 14:00, the Hermann Göring Panzer Regiment struck the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry, which had started to prepare defensive positions on ground overlooking the road junction at the coastal highway and had sent patrols almost to Casa del Priolo. Colonel Crawford's 2nd Battalion, along with paratroopers, bore the initial brunt of the German tank thrust. Calls for naval gunfire soon had shells dropping on the Niscemi road, but the German tanks, accompanied by reconnaissance and engineer troops in an infantry mission, rolled slowly past Casa del Priolo.Attacker: German (Elements of Pz.
