Overview:

With the German occupation of Sevastopol and Novorossiysk in 1942, the Soviet Black Sea Fleet had lost its primary naval bases. Its operations were shifted farther down the southeast coast to the city of Poti, whose port facilities were small and poorly equipped to serve as a naval base. An even smaller port, Gelendzhik, closer to Novorossiysk, picked up part of the workload. The recapture of Novorossiysk would provide the Soviet Black Sea Fleet with a base large enough to accommodate its naval forces. A diversionary force of 250 men landed on schedule in the vicinity of the small fishing village of Stanichka. Their purpose was to draw attention to themselves and away from the main landing at South Ozereika. Unofficially called smertniki (destined for death), they knew that there was little chance of their survival. Armed only with light infantry weapons, the men, led by Major Cesar L. Kunikov, were all volunteers from the 255th Naval Infantry Brigade. Cesar Kunikov was an experienced and capable officer, distinguished in prior actions on the Azov and Black Seas during 1941 and 1942. His men held him in the highest esteem. Legend has it that when Kunikov called for volunteers for his task force, he announced: “Who wants to go die with me?” More men than were needed stepped forward.

2026-01-19(D) Dave B vs Joseph L DiCamillo Russian win2.5 hrsI converted the 8-1 to a 10-0 commissar and set him up with a 4-5-8 and the HMG in the corner of the schoolhouse that directly faces the road running down from the bridge to the north, effectively cutting the map in two. I set up small forces to the east and west but put the main force in and adjacent to the schoolhouse, not wanting to get cut off from the exit zone by expected rapid maneuvering by my opponent. When deciding on a Russian setup, you will want to carefully count out his opening MPh possibilities; you might be surprised how far the German can come in the first turn with his abundance of leadership and liberal use of double-time. We played this one twice on the same day. In the first one, my opponent came on the gully side but began to realize just how difficult crossing that gully is, and that combined with my incredible rolling on the IFT, sniper activation and MCs led to a concession when it was clear that not enough EVPs could be garnered. We started again, with my opponent coming strong on my right flank this time (his left) but the dice rolling and the result was much the same. As someone else said, the Russians are perhaps deceptively strong in this one, based on these two playings. Still, such a small force is inherently brittle, and if a couple of squads break in the initial clash the Russians could easily be looking at a quick defeat against this massive German assault wave.
2024-04-14(A) Ron Franzen vs Ed McGranA German winWe actually used BOTH balance provisions (German and Russian). This is a great scenario for teaching/refreshing a newbie on basic Chapter A and B rules.
2023-06-25(D) Michal Bonaventura vs kandelabr Russian win
2020-08-17(D) Martí Cabré vs Ramon Sarobe Russian winThe Germans advanced on both flanks and I managed to slowly retreat without having casualties, only a squad surrendered. On turn 5 of 6 the Germans were in front of the school and they needed to cross to exit but all Russian units were there in good shape and after some shooting the Germans conceded. As a funny notes, the German 9-2 with the MMGs rolled 1,1 on the first turn and turned berserker, its whole stack turned berserker and charged on the Russian .50 HMG, which killed them all. Also, the German flamethrower fired five times at long distance and rolled 9 each time, to no effect. I told him to roll low.
