Overview:

In the battle for New Guinea, American and Australian troops pushed the Japanese ever northward in a series of ambushes, snipers, pockets and firefights for unimportant mud holes. The task of capturing Prothero I, a prominent peak in the Kankiryo Saddle, fell to the 2/12th Battalion. The advance up the ridge was conducted stealthily, and surprise was almost achieved. Then, a Japanese 75mm gun began firing over open sights at less than 100 meters range. . .
