Overview:
Late in March 1943, the US 34th Infantry Division was attempting to gain the important gap through the Eastern Dorsal -- an extension of the Atlas Mountains -- near Fondouk El Aouareb. If the Allies could succeed in driving the enemy out of the mountain defense, they would be in a position to cut off the Axis forces in the southern portion of the Tunisian bridgehead.
