Overview:
The New Zealand assault on Takrouna Hill had so far not gone well. The 21st and 23rd Battalions had lost severely in their attacks and had been forced to dig in below the Italian positions of the Trieste Division on the slopes of Takrouna Hill. However, while the two battalions were struggling through the mined cactus hedges and olive groves under heavy automatic fire and shelling, the 28th Maori Battalion had been sent to outflank the Italian positions by capturing the strategic Djebel Bir Hill and attack the eastern slopes of Takrouna. If the defenders could be routed, the New Zealanders would be able to flank Takrouna Hill from the southeast.Attacker: New Zealand (A, B and C Companies, 28th (Maori) Battalion, 5th New Zealand Brigade, 2nd New Zealand Division with Armor support)
