Overview:
Fighting through several German positions, the 2nd Battalion, 85th Mountain Infantry Regiment arrived on Hill 1022 adjacent to Mount della Torraccia late on 20 February 19545. An assault against Mount della Torraccia on 21 February was repulsed due to stiffening German resistance, a shortage of ammunition, several inaccurate American artillery fire missions causing friendly casualties, and German counterattacks laong the entire Belvedere-Torraccia ridgeline. By 23 February, mounting casualties in the 2nd Battalion, 85th Regiment required a fresh unit to take the lead for another attempt against Mount della Torraccia. During the night of 23/24 February, the 3rd Battalion, 86th Mountain Infantry Regiment passed through the 85th Regiment's lines.
