Overview:

After the German penetration along the Meuse, the BEF Commander Lord Gort ordered a retreat to the west. The Royal Norfolk Regiment which was part of the 4th Infantry Brigade abandoned their positions at the Dyle and marched to take up positions on the west bank of the Escaut near the town of Froidmont. The Germans were anxious to cross the Escaut and continue the drive to the Belgian coast. Advance elements of the German 18th Infantry Division had a small precarious bridgehead over the Escaut. The "Holy Boys" as the Norfolks were called, had the task of destroying this bridgehead before the Germans could expand it.
