Overview:
The primary objective of OVERLORD was the liberation of Caen. To this end, the Allied High Command launched Operation CHARNWOOD. On the heels of an intense bombing campaign, the Allies advanced southwest on a broad front, where they encountered heavy resistance from SS units in villages such as Buron, and comparatively weak resistance in areas held by the Luftwaffe's 16th Field Division, By mid-afternoon, the Canadian 3rd Division was on the verge of reaching the north bank of the Orne River, which split Caen into two sections, north and south. In the path lay a combination of remnants the Luftwaffe formation along with rearguard elements of the fanatic 12th SS Hitler Youth Division, a unit the Canadians have been fighting continuously for nearly a month.Attacker: Canadian (3rd Division)
