Overview:

The 4th Infantry Division had struggled through savage fighting in the Hürtgen Forest. Heavy casualties among veteran troop and leaders had taken their toll, forcing both sides to rely on waves of lesser experienced replacements to fill their depleted ranks. Now, Colonel Charles Lanham's 22nd Infantry Regiment was approaching the edge of the forest west of Grosshau. One of the final objectives Lanham had to clear before breaking out of the forest was the rubble filled village of Grosshau. Believed to be lightly defended, the village lay across hundreds of shellholes and open ground. A task force consisting of 3rd Battalion's King and Love Companies, along with attached Sherman tanks and M-10 tank destroyers prepared to attack Grosshau.

2025-08-19(D) Craig Renier vs Mike Cassaro German winThe Americans started off with mortar WP rate shots and a CH against the German concealed StugIII. The Stug ended up as burning wreck and 3 German MMCs were broken, one in a stone building, leaving the defense on his back foot right out of the gate. Later on the German right, a fortunate hit against an American Sherman followed by breaking two MMC and a leader shattered the American flanking attack provided much needed relief. The German pzks both broke on their initial TH and any successful pf roll resulted in a miss. But the German core defense remained resolute. On the final American turn, one American AFV bogged in wire and another was stunned, leaving the Americans unable to capture more than 8 building hexes.

I stumbled into the Mines fortunately with only a HS / 7-0. Kept the tanks back until later in the game [EXC: firing smoke] then got them in close to freeze / challenge the German AFVs. The 9-2 with a couple of squads manning the 0.5cal / MMG respectively is firing on the 24FP column; he had a couple of decent fire phases later in the game and that proved enough to tip the balance

The German HMG was in the steeple and was the target of much American fire for much of the game. My Americans moved slowly into the center woods and hit the wire and minefields. The German AT gun would hammer me and knock out two tanks. My Americans struggle mightily to make any headway. But slowly, my grinding attack got me into the victory area and at game end I would take 8 of the required 10 locations. The Germans would get the win, but it had been very close. (Too many support weapons in this scenario.)
