Overview:
In support of Operation CLIPPER, XXX Corps wanted one more push to take the villages that were beyond Geilenkirchen. The green 405th Infantry from the 102nd "Ozark" Division was released from reserve for this attack on Thanksgiving Day. Since the defending Volksgrenadiers had largely been replaced by the experienced 9th Panzer and 10th SS Panzer Divisions, the American command knew that the German defense would be more difficult than the initial Geilenkirchen battles.Although slowed by mud, the Ozarks made good initial progress across the open ground. But when some units took a small hill east of Beeck, machine guns and light flak pinned them down. The assault from the south supported by British tanks bogged down too, due not just to mud, but by panzers and assault guns as well. With the Ozarks stalled , the Germans then launched a counterattack which included heavy tanks.Attacker: American/British ((American) 405th Infantry Regiment, 102nd "Ozark" Infantry Division and (British) Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry)
