Overview:

Units of the 82nd Airborne were ordered to take hills being used by German artillery spotters to observe the Salerno beachhead. Elements of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment had taken Hill 424 during the night and were awaiting the rest of the regiment. In the morning, the Americans chased the remaining Germans off the hill. The Germans responded with an artillery barrage, which only encouraged the paratroopers to dig in. A mist gathered, obscuring the town of Altavilla and Hill 424 and ending the barrage. As the mist lifted, Company A and parts of Company B began taking direct fire from German tanks and artillery.
