Overview:

Lead elements of the 11th Panzer Division seized Ostrog on June 26th. Early the next morning, the Soviet 109th Motorized Division, along with attached light tanks with their 45mm cannons, counterattacked from the northwest. The fight for the town was so fierce that the 109th Motorized Division lost its commander within a few hours. The balance of forces shifted immediately around noon when the panzers of the 11th Panzer Division drew up to Ostrog. The 13th Tank Division sent in its reconnaissance battalion consisting of 17 BT tanks, 15 armored cars and a motorcycle platoon to assist 381st Motorized Rifle Regiment. Unfortunately, these reinforcements were unable to influence the outcome of the battle. The Germans drove the Soviets out of town and subsequently forced them to retreat across the River Viliya. Despite the Russians' inability to hold Ostrog, it did obstruct any further advance forward by the Germans.
