Overview:
Before the first Marine set foot on the shores of Volupai, the struggle for Bitokara was already a race against time. By landing at the base of the Willaumez Peninsula on March 6, the 1st Marine Division hoped to sprint across the narrow isthmus and establish a “stopper” that would trap the retreating Japanese force. The days leading up to Bitokara were defined by a brutal crawl through the Volupai Plantation, where Japanese snipers and mortar teams traded space for time. Slowly falling back toward the natural defensive bottleneck of the Bitokara Mission and the nearby airfield, the Japanese under the command of Captain Kiyomatsu Terunuma established a final but strong defence line around Bitokara Mission.Attacker: Japanese (No more details)
