Overview:

Before the Allies could cross the River Rhine it was necessary to clear the German defenders away from the area between the Rhine and Maas Rivers. This area, known as the Reichswald, was heavily fortified and defended. This was the first phase of Operation Veritable, otherwise known as the Battle of the Reichswald. The 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers were tasked with taking the high ground outside Kleve. Ordered to clear the Sternberg towering high over the city and guarding the only two roads from Nijmegen to Kleve the Fusiliers first had to take the small conical Klever Berg hill. Near the top of this feature stood a tall wooden look-out tower which served as a valuable observation post for the Germans. Late in the afternoon, Major Hunter led forward a small force of carriers. Dismounting before the assault they stormed forward.
