Overview:

While a battalion of the Israeli 202nd Paratroop Brigade was consolidating its hold on the mouth of the Mitla Pass, the remainder of the Brigade, supported by a company of AMX tanks, raced west to link up with them. Between this column and Mitla lay three Egyptian posts: Kuntilla, Thamed, and Nakhl. A surprising night assault upon Kuntilla saw its early collapse as the Egyptian troops abandoned the position. Forging ahead, the column reached the outskirts of the village of Thamed, 4 miles east of the fortified Egyptian clifftop strongpoint. The artillery was well behind the spearhead. Without the option of bypassing the strongpoint, Sharon ordered a blitz of the position just after the sun would rise behind him. Led by the AMX-13s, laying smoke and raising dust, the column stormed up the road, firing as it went.
