Overview:
Despite the widespread flooding and poor road conditions, Operation South Wind began at 0500 hours on February 17. The attack spread across open farmland, making good time throughout the morning. Pieper ordered his tanks over the crest of a hill and as if on a silver platter, the Russians lay in open ground before them. The Russian AT guns fired, but their rounds bounced off the frontal armor of the Tigers.
