Overview:
The attack of the 1/5 Welch on Rethem first met resistance about two miles short of the town. Some desultory fire on the approach was followed by heavier fire from small-arms. directed by German marines hidden in the woods. This first resistance was brushed aside easily enough, but when C Company neared the Strassengabel strongpoint, the enemy fire became a torrent of lead.Attacker: British (C Company, 1/5th Battalion, Welch Regiment, 158th Infantry Brigade, 53rd Welsh Division)
Defender: German (Komanie 3, Marine Grenadier Regiment 5, Marine Infanterie Division 2)
