Overview:
Although a planned attack was very similar to attacks which had failed, the cover of darkness was hoped to provide the edge needed for success. Two companies of the 1/5 Welch, A and C, stepped out across the line of departure at 0445 hours on 11 April, aimed at taking Rethem from the northwest. In their path were the marines of Marine Grenadier Regiment 5, secure in their series of company-sized strongpoints. One of these strongpoints, nicknamed 'Elfriede', lay right in the middle of A Company's line of advance.Attacker: British (A Company, 1/5th Battalion, The Welch Regiment, 158th Infantry Brigade, 53rd (Welch) Division)
