Overview:

After breaching the German defensive position known as "the Gully", First Canadian Division ordered its sole remaining uncommitted battalion, Royal 22eme Regt, to attack and exploit the situation. Of the initial two companies, only one was to make it to the start-line that morning. C company, under the command of Captain Paul Triquet, emerged from the the far side of the Gully to link up with the Shermans of the Ontario Regiment. Advancing at a steady pace in the face of the enemy paratroop battalion, Triquet's force approached an important road junction, the Cider crossroads. One mile away from Casa Berardi, a three storey stone Farmhouse to the west of Cider, Triquet's force had been reduced to two battle-worn platoons. Undaunted, triquet encouraged his troops with the words, "There are enemy to the front of us, behind us and on our flanks. There is only one safe place - that's on the objective".
