Overview:

In the early hours of the 12th November, 1944 the 2/8th Battalion (A.I.F.), as part of the 6th Australian Division, arrived in New Guinea. Its first task was to capture the line Abau – Malin and destroy the enemy forces between this line and the Danmap River. The next phase of the Battalion’s operation was to advance along the coast to secure the Wewak area. Operations on May 17th began with an airstrike and artillery concentration on Cape Boram which lay in the path of advance. As B Company crossed the start line with tanks of C Squadron 2/4th Armoured Regiment, the company began clearing the peninsula without opposition but the enemy were encountered all along the coastal strip east of Boram Creek. At the mouth of the creek the Japanese offered stubborn resistance from bunkers and foxholes in a strongly defended locality on the east bank. . . .The Australian 2/8th Battalion must force a crossing of Boram Creek (the stream on Board 36) in the face of an entrenched Japanese defense based around eight squads and four crews manning 2 MMGs, an HMG and a 75mm infantry gun. The Japanese also have 3 pillboxes available.
