Overview:
The northern wing of Russian General Malinovsky’s December offensive to surround Budapest was initially successful. The Ipoly Valley was a key sector for the defense of this area. The only units available were parts of the 24th Panzer Division and an SS Brigade under Oskar Dirlewanger, the notorious troops that had put down the Warsaw Uprising. The wild convicts that made up the Brigade were stationed in the town of Fót, where they were ordered to meet the Russian attack, despite the best efforts of the Brigade to bug out. The Russian 30th Rifle Corps hit the Germans hard, pushing them out of Fót.
