Overview:

This was the critical day of the operation for the Americans. General Collins decided to gamble and committed his armored forces before the situation was unquestionably ripe for an exploitation maneuver. Instead of assigning exploitation objectives, Collins told one of the armored columns to take Marigny, the other St. Gilles. Near Marigny, the troops encountered increasing resistance of the German Infantry Division 353 and the two companies of the SS Panzer Division 2.

2010-03-13(A) Edward Fritz vs Darrell Wright American winA meaty scenario with lots of stuff. The Americans have to get a VP total by either causing CVP or exiting through the Germans. The American player was able to exit several halftracks off the board prior to the German (SS) reinforcements arrival. The remainder of the points (except one tank exited) were from CVP. The American fighter-bombers with rockets made the winning kill.

Possible sleaze win? (view)Kihmbar2010-03-14 19:30:58
I don't know if the scenario designers considered what occurred in my most recent playing of Ripe for the Picking. It seems like they did because they have an overlay placed by SSR that allows this maneuver to succeed. [The overlay replaces some woods with orchards.] The American player was able to drive a series of halftracks down the board edge on one side and exit them quickly. The BFP boards have bocage terrain on them, but the half-hex on the edge of the board does not. This allowed the American player to bypass the woods in the half-hex and avoid running through the bocage (even taking into account that the bocage depiction is part of the blocking terrain when determining if there is enough room for bypass). With no bocage to slow down the tanks (or stop the halftracks), it was easy for the American to bypass the town with part of his forces (exiting the halftracks for VP). This tactic really shifted the balance of the game - the American player was able to exit 20 points (1/5 of what they needed) using this sideslip and was able to achieve his EVP+CVP VP total during German turn 6 - three turns early). It makes me wonder why the woods were changed to orchards to allow this easy exit. There is so much bocage on that side of the board that I cannot reasonably see the American player cutting through it with cullin devices and running off the board through the orchard overlay. And the initial German OOB does not contain enough units to cover the entire map - so if the German player sets up for the American to use this maneuver, he is completely out of position (or doesn't have enough units) to defend other avenues of attack. Were I to play this scenario again, I believe I would disallow bypass on half-hexes. That would give the German player a fighting chance by either forcing the Americans to slow down and cut through the bocage or to fight though the streets of the town.
