Overview:

"Give Way!" - On 5th June 1940, between the Somme and the Oise, began “Fall Rot”, the offensive which deliver the coup de grace to the French army. Four days later, in Champagne, the second part of the operation began, despite fierce resistance shown to the attackers throughout. On the evening of the 10th, the French began to fall back, but in the area of the 2nd Army, the Germans were unaware of this before dawn, and General Guderian’s tanks and infantry fell behind. For the French, despite fatigue and losses, several units remained remarkable cohesion. However, the bulk of the French infantry had to retire by foot, whilst their opponents were largely motorized. Thus, on the 13th, when in mid-afternoon the 1st Battalion of the 6th Regiment d’Infanterie Coloniale Mixte Senegalais (6th RICMS) approached a crossroads at Braux-Saint-Remy, south of Sainte Menehould, the column had been scattered by advanced elements of German motorized units. Commander Cordier, believing he was not facing a large enemy force, decided to push through the position.
