Overview:
The 331st Infantry’s assault battalion attacked by going straight down the paved highway. Aided by artillery, the troops encountered light enemy fire and managed to cross the river, establishing a foothold in town. A lucky enemy shell destroyed the bridge into town, thereby denying the U.S. soldiers any tank support. Although outnumbering the defenders, the American assault on the town stalled, and a small German counterattack in the afternoon forced them to retire.Attacker: American (331st Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division)

A killer stack with all 666 and MMG forced the SS to duck and retreat allowing the US troops to advance and conquer some buildings. The panzers were a big threat but another CH from a mortar immobilized one for the rest of the battle. Despite the US troops dropping in quality by ELR, they keep coming back to fight. On the contrary, the previously killed SS leader would have been very helpful to rally the routed SS troops. The Americans achieved victory in the last turn with 17 building hexes controlled. The SS were able to capture two hexes back but that was not enough. A very tense scenario. | |||

| 2022-02-25 | (A) Jonathan Plott | vs | Steve Boro | German (SS) win (VASL Log) | Steve (SS defender) and Jon (attacking Yanks) played RPT56 Failure to Assimilate this afternoon, and I (Jon) managed to replicate in painstaking fashion the historical outcome. The Yanks outnumbered the SS more than 2 to 1 (even AFTER the arrival of SS reinforcements), but Steve's expert defensive array essentially remained untouched by the time I resigned the game after the Third American turn. The yanks began with 15 squads; at game end there were 3 good order American squads on the board. Had it not been for a CH mortar shot against a LMG/5-4-8 in a stone building, the SS would have held the field with a fully intact OB. A very challenging tactical problem for the Yanks. I was the SS defender in this one and my opponent and I could not figure out a credible attack strategy for the Americans. The U.S. is loaded with 6 ML troops having to attack across open ground against some fierce ML 8 defenders LOADED with machine guns. Even though I gave my opponent the play balance, this one just does not seem to be well balanced at all. Very disappointing! |
