Overview:

The village of Croce consisted of a row of house situated around a church. More importantly, this otherwise unimportant hamlet was situated on a ridge, and dominated several roads leading to Coriano, Gemmano and San Savino, making it a military objective of some importance. Orders were sent up for two battalions, the 8th and 9th Fusiliers, to seize the village. Support in the form of a preparatory bombardment, and tanks from the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, were part of the plan.
