Overview:

By the end of the second week in December the former defenders of Stalingrad were finally ready to take the initiative and begin their bid to recapture the ruined city. In the southern end of the Red October factory complex, two of those structures were Hall 8 (the Plate Mill) and 8a (an immense, caved-in warehouse). For almost two months, the troops of Guriev's 39th Guards Rifle Division had been locked in mortal combat with the Rhinelanders of Infanterie-Division 79. To help prepare for the attack on the Plate Mill, under cover of darkness six Red Army scouts cut their way through wire entanglements and approached the German-held shop. Moving stealthily, they took one prisoner and then stole their way silently back to their lines. Aided by information gathered from the night raid, soldiers of Major Legunin's 112th Guards Rifle Regiment rushed the enemy strongpoint in Hall 8. The fatigued Germans were forced to flee first one, and then another, section of the massive hall. The Soviets started to slowly realize that the playing field had “evened up” a little bit.
