Overview:

The Maquis du Vercors had taken control of the Vercors Plateau on the night of 8/9 June 1944. The Republic of Vercors was declared on 3 July. The Allies made a large weapons drop to the Maquis on 14 July. One week later, the Germans encircled the Plateau; they then attacked from the north, south, and east and made an airborne landing. The Maquis least expected an attack from the east, as that route crossed the cliff-side, mountain face of the Plateau. The attack by the 157 Reserve Division, a Gebirgsjager training unit, was led by Reserve Gebirgsjager Regiment 1 and attacked toward the six passes cutting through the fortress-like, plateau face.
