Overview:

Despite an incredible number of command mistakes, a series of flanking attacks had put the Allies in position to cut off and destroy the isolated Germans who had captured Narvik. The defending German force was a mixed batch of excellent Gebirgsjager infantry and crews from the destroyer flotilla which had transported the mountain troops during the assault on Narvik. The Allies launched a coordinated attack from two sides: the Poles from the south, and a beach assault from the north by combined forces of the Norwegians and the French Foreign Legion. Just as the Legionnaires gained the first slopes of the Taraldsvikfjell, the Germans counterattacked, nearly driving a wedge between the French on the hill and the Norwegians who had just landed. Only naval gunfire from a British ship stationed in the fjord stopped the counterattack, driving the Germans back in confusion. The French regrouped and were quick to react.
Attacker: Norwegian / French (1er Bataillon, 13ème Demi-Brigade de Legion Étrangre and 2/15th Infantry Battalion)
Defender: German (Gebirgsjäger Regiment 139 and Naval personnel of the Gruppe Haussels)

2025-05-04(A) Vic Lauterbach vs JM Norwegian / French winWe played this oldie as a Narvik mini-CG with J45. I drew the Allies. Crossing hilly, snowy OG under fire from 468s that wouldn't break was rough. The HMG in O4 made P3-P4-Q3-Q5-R2-R5 a killing ground. Then the 468s in the front foxholes O4 and O5 finally broke, and my MMC swarmed the hill. The last two LVL-3 hexes (J4 and K5) seemed out of reach, and the two 436s there put up a stiff fight in GT5 (rolling three 2's to hold off the Norwegians) but broke in the French DFPh of GT6. Jim: My central position got squeezed down to the M5 foxhole with two cliff hexsides preventing rout! A desperate counterattack cost me a 468 but recaptured the N5 foxhole and killed a 237, but I couldn't hold it. When the last 468s broke, they had nowhere to rout to! Super close game, very tough on the attackers in the beginning and equally tough on the defenders at the end!

2023-07-27(D) M T vs V K German winI played the Germans and found the scenario a nice puzzle to figure out as the defender. The Germans have the elite 468s and the HMG, but half their troops are really brittle sailors. The Allies have double as much troops as the Germans, with half of them being elite Legionnaires, but they have to cross a lot of open ground and are constantly hampered by the added MF cost of elevation changes. I found that the balance works quite well and enjoyed the scenario.
