Overview:
In the summer of 1942 German and Italian forces jointly launched Operation Hercules. German Paratroopers started their drops in the first hours of the 15th of July to secure the high ground behind the invasion beaches and to seize a nearby airfield so Axis transport aircraft could quickly land additional ground forces and supplies. The small Krendi Airfield in the south of the island was identified as the primary objective. Just a few hours after the air assault, when air activity over the airfield was still intense, the first group of seaborne Italian assault troops finally reached the airfield where the Fallschirmjäger were fighting the local garrison. Then, suddenly, armor support (from both sides) and British reinforcements coming from inland appeared on the battlefield.Attacker: German / Italian (7.
