Overview:

A monthly Japanese supply column travelled through the remote Hsingkuan Pass leading to Taiyuan, Shaanxi from the Japanese supply areas in neighboring Shanxai Province. Here, one of the more famous ambushes by the Chinese People's Liberation Army would take place. However, at the tail end of this long winding column, the PLA did not have enough forces to completely surround this column. Once the trap had been sprung and the initial shock had passed, the surviving Japanese now sought the only cover in the desolate area -- that of an old, abandoned temple at the rear of the pass.
