Overview:
The U.S. VII Corps' role in Operation GRENADE was to force a crossing of the Roer River and advance east to the Erft Canal, with the ultimate goal of reaching the Rhine River at Cologne. At Blessum, twenty-two year old Leutnant Heinz Rafoth observed two American infantry companies (with two Sherman tanks in support) approaching the Erft bridges. He decided to make a stand. With only a twenty-man kampfgruppe of stragglers and supply troops from 1st Battalion, 48th Grenadier Regiment, he occupied a position to hold open the bridges long enough for the rest of 1st Battalion to cross over to the village of Liblar on the east side of the Erft.Attacker: American (121st Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division and 740th Tank Battalion)
